From Collisions to Discovery: Particle Physics with the CMS Experiment at CERN

Bandung – Internal Physics Seminar is back at the beginning of 2025! The guest speaker this time is an alumni of UNPAR Physics Study Program class of 2013, Meutia Wulansatiti. Meutia or often called Muti, is currently a postdoctoral researcher (Postdoctoral Associate) at Rice University and actively conducts research at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). On this occasion, Kak Muti shared the knowledge she gained during her study and research at CERN.
The seminar began with a simple explanation of particles, what particles exist on earth. Then continued with an explanation of how particles “behave” when interacting and what effects they have on themselves and other particles. The seminar then ended with an explanation of how the discovery of a particle can be obtained both theoretically and experimentally. Simple explanations and examples that are easy to understand make this seminar more interesting. From this seminar, it can also be seen that the information about particle experiments carried out turns out to be far more than any information considering that observations are carried out every day and almost every minute produces data which will then be considered whether there are differences and the possibility of the emergence of other particles than those previously known.

The Physics Major would like to thank Muti for sharing her knowledge. Hopefully, with this seminar, students who are interested in the field of Theoretical Physics, especially Particle Physics, will be more motivated in studying the field. We also wish Muti well in the future. See you at another Physics Seminar!
