Bandung – On Friday, May 23, 2025, the Basic Physics Laboratory of the Physics Major received a visit from 1st grade students of BPK Penabur Singgasana Elementary School Bandung. This visit was carried out in collaboration with the UNPAR STEM Study Center, where students not only visited the Physics Study Program, but were also invited to the STEM learning laboratory.
Students were invited to see and participate in Physics demonstrations that have been designed to be fun for elementary school students. The activity began with an introduction between the speakers from the Physics Study Program, namely Mrs. Putri Lestari as the laboratory assistant of the Basic Physics Laboratory and Ms. Yuanita as a lecturer in the Physics Major with elementary school students. After throwing questions that provoke students’ curiosity, the activity continued with a demonstration of mixing light with different colors. Students were very enthusiastic to mention the colors they liked and knew before, also asking how their favorite colors could be formed.
Then the activity continued with the question “Who likes balloons?”. All students enthusiastically raised their hands. Students were then invited to blow up the balloon together. The balloon was then used by the speaker to demonstrate the principle of pressure on the fakir chair (nail chair). The balloon did not burst and aroused students’ curiosity, “Why didn’t the balloon hit the nail?”. Students then had fun guessing the reason and one of them managed to guess! After being explained by the resource person, students were still curious and tried to sit on the chair because they believed that if the surface occupying the chair was large, the “pain” would be spread out so that it would not hurt.
Students were also invited to see the phenomenon of “lightning” through the Wimshurst machine. Students are invited to guess how “lightning” can ‘disappear’ if there is a lightning rod and how “lightning” can form in the room. The activity was closed with a demonstration of non-Newtonian fluids, which are liquids that if hit hard will not budge or do not change shape but if left in the hand, the liquid will flow slowly between the hands. Every child enthusiastically tried to play it.
The Physics Study Program would like to thank SD BPK Penabur Singgasana for the visit and for giving us the opportunity to invite students to learn science in a way that is fun for them. Hopefully this visit can increase students’ enthusiasm for learning.
